BUSSARD, MITCHELL, SANDERS posted by Don Sanders on February 11, 1998

My grandfather, Jess SANDERS, was born in Carroll Co. Kentucky in April 1893. His mother Emma MITCHELL Sanders died the same day as a result, and my grandfather was sent to live with "his grandparents in Illinois", according to my late grandmother. The only hint I have to where he possibly went is a studio photograph taken of Jess when he was about two years old (ca.1895). On the front of the picture is this information: "J.W. BUSSARD, Flat Rock, Ills."(photographer). On back, written finely in pencil is information concerning the ownership of the photo, probably written by the photographer, and this is hard to read and not all clear: "G.T. MITCHELL; PO Turner; C. FF 195; boy; (and the rest can't be read, yet, but it looks like "Turner" appears again)". Jess's grandfather was Jeptha T. (J.T.) MITCHELL (1844-1918), a veteran of the 13th Ky. Infantry, US. He is buried in Worthville, Carroll Co., Ky. cemetery. The Ky. BVS does not list him as dying in Kentucky, but does list his wife, Eliza A., who died two years earlier, and is buried next to him. The burial site of their daughter, Emma, is still unknown, though it should be somewhere in Carroll Co., Ky. My grandfather, Jess, allegedly lived in Illinois until he was eight, or nine, and his "grandparents" brought him back to Kentucky, and when his father saw what a big, healthy boy he'd become, wouldn't let him return with his grandparents. My grandmother said that it "broke the old folks' heart."
