DEWITT, MCCORPIN, REYNOLDS, WALTERS, WRIGHT posted by Roberta Liames on April 15, 1999

WRIGHT, DEWITT, MCCORPIN, WALTERS I am searching for any information on the above. My great-grandfather, Richard WRIGHT, Born abt. 1821 in Bear Wallow, Green County, Kentucky and married Elizabeth DEWITT born abt 1824 in Kentucky. After her death, Richard left the Kentucky area and settled in Crawford co., Illinois. I believe that he might have died prior to the 1880 census. I found my grandfather, Jesse WRIGHT living with the James DEWITT family in. Jesse married Emma M. DEWITT, daughter of James S. DEWITT and Mildred Ann REYNOLDS. Mildred died in 1865 and James remarried. James married a rich widow, Stacy [MCCORPIN] Walters. The marriage of Jesse and Emma ended in a divorce. However, there were two children both females - one born August 11, 1881 in Lamotte township, Crawford, Illinois and the was Della A. WRIGHT b. April 5, 1888. After the death of James DEWITT, Della might have gone to live with step siblings - WALTERS. Jesse WRIGHT never acknowledged the birth of his daughters. Any information on Richard WRIGHT or Della WRIGHT would be greatly appreciated.

MAIN, ODOM, VAN WINKLE posted by Jimmy Ray Odom on April 21, 1999

I am Jimmy ODOM, vice chairman of The Anderson County Historical Commission, located in Palestine, Texas. My subject is Micham MAIN...came here with a large group from Crawford County Ill., in the 1830's. MAIN was one of 3 men who laid out the county seat for Anderson County in 1846. I have found a document written later about the naming of Palestine, Tx. Micham MAIN gave the name of Palestine, the embryo city in honor of his native town in Ill. from which he emigrated. He died just over a year later in 1847 and has been overlooked and forgotten in the history concerning Palestine, TX. I have located his grave in what turned out to be a slave cemetery after he was buried there on his own land in 1847. I will complete my application for a Texas Historical marker for him soon; however I need a little more information on his early live there in Palestine, Ill. we know that he married Elizabeth VAN_WINKLE in 1820. He was born between 1794-1800 in Crawford Co., near Palestine Ill. I have found a brick that had a '50' imprinted when it was made. His age has been said to be early 50's. Any information that could establish his birth year as 1797, would make the brick, evidence to prove the location. Many bricks were used in the mosulieum type grave. I would be interested in any deed, title, or probabe records that may have his age listed. I want to complete this soon and have plans to include local media reports linking Palestine Ill, to Palestine, TX. There is a small country church here named Fields Chapel Methodist Church with about 7 great-g-grandchildren of Micham MAIN that makes up most of the members. Most of them are in the 70's and 80's and are eagerly awaiting my results to finalize my research. Please help me if you can.

BECKWITH, GRISHAM, GRISWOLD, LOGAN posted by Mary Erickson on April 27, 1999

Palestine, Crawford County. I am researching Benjamin BECKWITH and his father Silas BECKWITH. I need to confirm that Benjamin married Sarah Elmina GRISWOLD (or GRISHAM) in NY. They had 8 children. The last was our great grandmother Sarah Elmina BECKWITH born in Crawford Co and who married Alexander Houston LOGAN in Richland County. I believe that some of the Beckwiths were buried in Crawford Co. The family tells the story that Alexander was killed in an accident in Palestine in the summer of 1876. Are any of these names in your line?
