ROBERTS posted by Tom Marshall on November 18, 1997

I have a great, great grandfather- William H. ROBERTS, MD- who settled in Annapolis to start his first medical practice after serving in the 39th Alabama Volunteer Confederate Regiment as a surgeon. Prior to enlisting, he was in attendance at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. Prior to that he lived in Gibson County, IN, from birth. I understand that southern Indiana had many southern sympathizers, but I believe the rest of his family was not of that persuasion. I am trying to figure out why he went to Annapolis, Ill. Family oral history (of questionable accuracy) is that he either left the battlefield due to being ill with tuberculosis or having killed a man in a duel- either way, he probably deserted (while being pursued by troops?) and ended up in the care of an Annapolis family by the name of Murphy who nursed him back to health. Any info on Dr. ROBERTS would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on Alexander CRAWFORD, his wife and children and famly ancestors--I believe he was born in Ireland. He is listed as father to Ella M. who is my maternal great grandmother and her sister Kate. He died April 19, 1904 at the age of 76. My Grandmother was Beula Catherine and was born in Flat Rock, 23 February 1897 to Marion Chastain CARTER and Ella M. CRAWFORD. Marion Chastain CARTER was also born in Illinois on 6 April 1860 to Barry Harrison CARTER and Rosa MONTGOMERY. Marion CARTER and Ella CRAWFORD may have had a son who died. Any information about this will be helpful.

DUNCAN posted by Linda Roberts on November 26, 1997

DUNCAN: Searching for the burial place of my gr gr grandfather Joseph DUNCAN. He moved with his family to Crawford Co. from Blount Co. TN in 1851. He is believed to have died on 5/5/1863. A short while after that his family moved to Douglas Co (Arcola), IL. They were moved by 1870 census. I could not find this family in the 1860 census; however, looking at microfilm you can miss names sometimes. It is also believed that his son, Joseph Porter DUNCAN, served in the Civil War at the close of the war and I have also been unable to find a record on him either. I would appreciate hearing from anyone knowing anything about the above.
